The Lottery Winners

My final official SXSW set was delivered by one in all my fave new artist discoveries – England’s The Lottery Winners.  The band’s vitality, mixed with the positivity of their songs, made for a cathartic expertise.

Ben Kweller

Kweller handled a Friday night time crowd to a set full of rockin’ fan favorites.  Energy pop for the folks.  So, so good.

Close to Beer

With band members unfold throughout the nation (and in 3 states), Close to Beer take full benefit of their rare alternatives to carry out.  The group basically arrange store at Austin venue Facet Bar, performing there three consecutive days.  I caught them twice, reveling of their spirited, electrical guitar-fueled efficiency.  Bonus factors for a stellar cowl of the Aimee Mann/’Til Tuesday traditional “Voices Carry”.

Malin Pettersen

Norway’s Pettersen continues to evolve her sound.  Whereas her early work was rooted in Americana, her newest album has a slick, indie pop taste.  She and her band placed on an exquisite and sometimes intense efficiency that showcased her new songs early Thursday afternoon.

Phil Hurley

Twangville fave Hurley and his combo introduced some warmth to Thursday afternoon, rocking via tracks from his simply launched new EP.

Mic Harrison and the Excessive Rating

It’s all the time enjoyable to fulfill an artist whose work you’ve lengthy admired – and even corresponded with just a few instances – for the primary time.  All the higher to fulfill them after they’ve completed up a rockin’ set.  Knoxville, Tennessee’s Mic Harrison first crossed my radar as a part of the late, nice V-Roys.  He then frolicked with energy pop extraordinaires Superdrag earlier than embarking on a solo profession.  Nice to lastly hear – and meet – you, Mic.

Nathan Mongol Wells

I used to be solely capable of catch just a few songs from Dallas-based Nathan Mongol Wells however he certain made them rely.  The long-time Ottoman Turks singer-songwriter leaned closely on his 2023 solo outing, together with my private fave, his ballad “Taken for a Experience”.

JD Graham

I solely caught just a few songs by Phoenix by the use of Oklahoma singer-songwriter Graham however they left an impression. His stark tales of a life battling drug dependancy and time spent in jail have been fascinating and left me keen to listen to extra.

In regards to the creator:  Delicate-mannered company govt by day, excitable Twangville denizen by night time.
