“Man, it’s an unimaginable yr,” Scott Stapp tells Billboard, regardless of not being even one-quarter of the best way by way of 2024. One four-night reunion-show cruise in April — first introduced final July as Stapp, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips’ first exhibits collectively since 2012 — led to a second cruise, and each rapidly bought out. Then a months-long summer season reunion trek, amphitheater exhibits that can kick off in July, wasn’t sufficient to fulfill shopper demand, so Creed plotted an area run for the autumn, too. And forward of these reunion exhibits, Creed skilled a web based revival, because of viral remixes, TikTok clips, World Collection sing-alongs and an look in a Tremendous Bowl industrial.

Over 20 years after their industrial peak (1999’s Human Clay and 2001’s Weathered have bought a mixed 19.9 million copies, in line with Luminate) and 10 years since they disbanded amid waning gross sales and audiences, Creed has all of the sudden by no means been cooler. A band that was as soon as a important punching bag now has no much less a barometer for up to date cool than SZA declaring, “I can be a Creed fan without end.”

“So many constructive issues have already occurred which might be simply mind-blowing, when it comes to the extent of Creed’s resurgence,” Stapp says.

In the meantime, the wins have prolonged to Stapp’s solo profession: Larger Energy, his fourth album on his personal, can be launched by way of Napalm Data this Friday (Mar. 15) and is being preceded by the highest-charting single of his non-Creed profession, the hard-charging title observe, which has climbed to No. 12 on Mainstream Rock Airplay and earned 1.4 million streams to this point, in line with Luminate. Larger Energy is Stapp’s most full solo providing to this point — growling and energetic, but additionally admirably reflective, significantly on “If These Partitions Might Speak,” a robust meditation on his well-documented previous substance abuse points, created as a duet with Dorothy Martin of the exhausting rock band Dorothy.

Stapp, who kicked off a solo tour final evening (Mar. 10) forward of the discharge of Larger Energy, says that the assist for the solo album and Creed reunion has “already exceeded all expectations.” He spoke to Billboard about what that encouragement means for him, personally and professionally. [Ed. note — this interview has been condensed for clarity.]

You’ve bought hundreds of thousands of albums and scored a ton of hits, and but I’ve to think about that the thrill round this comeback represents a particular type of achievement for you.

I’m nonetheless making an attempt to course of it, to be trustworthy with you. It’s so profound of a resurgence that it’s an anomaly. However once I look again, I might see the construct — you recognize, Creed was going viral on-line throughout COVID, after which it simply intensified in 2021 and stored taking place in 2022. And so you might see the swell of our music simply connecting with a whole era — a few of whom weren’t even alive once we broke up — after which reconnecting with people who have been part of the journey again within the day.

After which to see it transfer from social media, to the World Collection, to the Tremendous Bowl — after which to see the overwhelming response within the ticket gross sales? It’s only a lot to absorb. It’s all constructive stuff, and so now, it’s simply ensuring that we’re all in place, we are able to journey on this positivity, and provides the followers what they need.

You’re placing out your fourth solo album earlier than any of the Creed reunion exhibits. When did Larger Energy begin coming collectively?

I went within the studio and first began writing for this file in January 2021. I had no timeline, and the entire Creed dialog wasn’t even taking place — I used to be solely getting into to write down a file after which flip it in once I was achieved. So I started writing then and simply went in once I felt impressed, once I felt like I wanted to go get one thing off my chest, or I wanted to flee and use the artistic course of as a type of remedy.

The album got here collectively as a direct reflection of my life — I used to be residing it in the course of the time period that I used to be writing it. And I used to be capturing the vocal efficiency proper when the track was born, within the warmth of feeling that emotion that birthed the track. A number of instances, you’ll return and also you’ll re-track vocals, and do issues over once more. And it’s actually exhausting, I’ve discovered, to recapture a few of that spirit that comes out once you’re actually residing it. And so with this file, I didn’t try to try this: I captured it, stored it, and would proceed to construct the music round it. And I feel it actually had a dynamic influence on the vibe of the file, as a result of we captured lightning in a bottle with every track.

That actually extends to “If These Partitions Might Speak,” your duet with Dorothy Martin and one of many uncommon duets in your catalog.

The duet itself got here collectively after the track was written. I recorded the vocals initially pondering that it was simply one other track on my file, however after I listened again, I knew instantly this wanted a feminine vocal, it wanted to be a duet. So I went on my search, in search of the appropriate feminine vocalist, [and being in Nashville now seven years, I thought that this song would possibly be my entry point into country music.

I did a weekend gig in Montana with Daughtry, and I was unfamiliar with Dorothy, who happened to be opening that show. We watched her perform, and I knew two or three songs in that that was the voice that needed to be on the song. She happened to be recording in Los Angeles with the same producer that I used on this record, Scott Stevens. I reached out to Scott for something about my record, and he said, “I’ll have to get back to you, I’m in the studio with Dorothy.” And I said, “Oh, dude, I just met her in Montana! Play her ‘If These Walls Could Talk’ and see if she’s interested!” He played her the song, and he wrote me back and said, “She’s in tears. She’s in.”

A couple of weeks later, I got the email with her performance on it, and when I listened to it, I knew instantly that my gut was right. Her performance just blew me away, and I think it really took the song next level. I think it’s really going to do what I had hoped for this song — help it reach more people, and connect with more people who can identify with that message, and let them know they’re not alone in the world.

You’re squeezing in a solo tour in March to support the album. Was that always the plan before the Creed shows?

There was no Creed reunion on the table when I was making this record — the only thing that I had on my radar was making a solo record and going on a solo tour. When the cruise conversations came up, I was still in the mindset of, “I’m doing a solo record.” But then the excitement kept building, and more conversations began to happen, and the next thing you know, we’ve announced two tours, an [amphitheater] tour and an area tour.

I bear in mind having conversations with my workforce about this, they usually simply stored speaking to me, “Hey, it is a good factor, man. The vibes are so constructive with you and the fellows in Creed, and a rising tide raises all ships.” Everybody in Creed is supportive of everybody’s tasks exterior of the band, so I simply have a look at it as a win all the best way round — a win for Creed, and a win for for my solo file.

It’s a nonstop yr, between the solo tour, the Creed cruises, the amphitheater run after which the world run. What are you doing to bodily and mentally put together?

Nicely bodily, I train and prepare a minimum of 5 days every week at minimal — I’m getting ready my physique and have been for years, however I’ve even stepped it up, due to all the things that’s in entrance of me. And mentally, I’m simply making an attempt to remain centered, grounded and centered on my religion. I do know that once I’m strolling proper, in my religious life, and in my religion, good issues occur. Once I get off observe with that, unhealthy issues occur.

However it’s nonetheless going to be difficult, and I’m approaching this prefer it’s a marathon. You’ll be able to’t stroll into something like this prefer it’s a dash, otherwise you burn out. So that you’ve bought to take these moments for your self once you want them. It’s OK to relaxation. It’s OK, on sure days that you don’t have anything to do, you clear your plate and take a psychological and bodily timeout to regroup. I feel at this level in my life, I do know what to do. And I’m lucky that I’m going to have folks round me that assist me and encourage me, and are there to assist me navigate as effectively, as a result of there’s no level in making an attempt to do that alone.

What’s it been like messaging forwards and backwards with the opposite Creed guys as extra exhibits get introduced and viral moments happen?

Overwhelming, in a constructive approach. All our correspondence and all our interactions have been nothing however good vibes. Everybody needs all people else to win, and everybody’s enthusiastic about getting onstage once more. We’re simply gonna journey this wave and actually recognize it in a complete new approach. As a result of you recognize, particularly from my standpoint, I do know what it’s prefer to have it — and I do know what it’s prefer to lose all of it. And so this go-around is simply strolling in full appreciation, gratitude and respect, and simply making an attempt to domesticate and nurture relationships. Since you by no means know when it may be gone once more.
