I need to make PhillyCheeze’s
Rock & Blues Assessment #650 particular and deal with my native blues scene in a
very particular approach. It’s a uncommon event
to have the ability to brag concerning the considerable quantity of blues Iowa has to supply and this
is an ideal time to shine a lightweight on it.
If you end up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on a Thursday evening
and really feel the urge to listen to some blues in an genuine juke joint surroundings, navigate
your self to JM O’Malley’s within the Irish District of city. For over twenty-five years, each Thursday
night, Iowa Blues Corridor-of Famer Tom ‘T-Bone’ Giblin (Lonnie Brooks,
Elvin Bishop, The Dynatones) has led a legendary jam at this Irish bar on keys
and organ. The magic of those
much-adored jams is fabulously captured on CD and options two tracks apiece
from seven completely different acts who performed O’Malley’s in 2023. Every observe options Giblin on the helm
of the keys. The lineup consists of Charlie
Morgan and the Bone Crushers, Iowa Blues Corridor-of-Famer and Worldwide
Blues Problem winner in three classes Kevin Burt, Matt Panek
(The Electrical Koolaid Trio), D’Canine and the B’Bits that includes Iowa Blues
Corridor-of-Famer and Iowa Rock n Roll Corridor-of-Famer Dennis McMurrin, Iowa
Blues Corridor-of-Famer and Iowa Rock n Roll Corridor-of-Famer Craig Erickson, Iowa
Blues Corridor-of-Famer and Iowa Rock n Roll Corridor-of-Famer Bryce Janey, and Merrill
Miller (Shakey Ft).
The album kicks off with a wonderful
Chicago-style blues jam with Charlie Morgan and the Bone Crushers on “Two
Trains Runnin’”. Giblin tears it
up on keys and Dave Bader lays down a blues-soaked bassline for Morgan
as he fearlessly belts out the vocals and rips it up on guitar. Native music legend Dennis McMurrin,
who reduce an album with The Tower of Energy in 1986, leads D’Canine and the
B’Bits by way of a cool cowl of Jr. Walker’s “Cleo’s Again”. Carried out with one other Iowa Blues Corridor-of-Famer
bassist Dan Johnson, and drummer Butch O’Connell, the observe is a downright
terrific. I like that Kevin Burt
was on this recording. I nonetheless keep in mind
the primary time seeing him and The Blues Instigators, again in 1993
shortly after I moved to Iowa. His band was
one I might typically see over time. Burt
performs his iconic unique “Actual Love” in addition to a soulful, funky cowl of Invoice
Withers’ 1972 traditional “Who’s He (and What’s He to You)?”. When Bryce Janey brings his guitar to
the stage for a few his originals “Consuming Soiled Water” and “Apply
What You Preach”, it makes for a high-voltage dose of guitar-centric blues. It’s all the time a pleasure to listen to this man play.
Matt Panek aka “Matty Koolaid”
brings the Massive Joe Turner traditional “Honey Hush” to a sear, and it sounds nice. Craig Erickson, a hands-down all-time
favourite, seems along with his band Sky Prepare that includes John Corridor on
bass and Rob Haskell on drums for a rare efficiency of “Mojo
in Memphis” from his 2015 album Sky Prepare Galaxy. Merrill Miller, who I first heard many
years in the past play as a duo with Bryce Janey, now fronts his personal band Shakey
Ft, comprised of Butch O’Connell on drums and Troy Harper
on bass. Their cowl of Muddy Waters’
“Obtained My Mojo Workin’” absolutely makes me smile.
That is what the blues is all about.
JM O’Malley’s 25 Yrs of Dwell
Music is a splendid recording which captures the immense musical expertise we’ve got within the I-380 Hall. I extremely advocate this one, so make a cease out at JM O’Malley’s and purchase a replica.
