The CU Presents Artist Collection will function violinist Ray Chen, who’s billed as “redefining what it means to be a classical musician within the twenty first century,” along with Hispanic-American pianist Julio Elizalde in a live performance program combining severe and lighter works Thursday ( 7:30 p.m. March 21 in Mackay Auditorium; particulars under).

The most important works on this system are Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 7 in C minor, op. 30 no. 2, and J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 3 in E main for solo violin, S1006. Filling out this system are encore materials items, beginning with Tartini’s showpiece the “Satan’s Trill” Sonata. After the 2 heavier works, Chen and Elizalde will wrap up this system with Antonio Bazzini’s sensible “Dance of the Goblins,”  Fritz Kreisler’s association of Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance No. 2, and their very own association of “Spain” by Chick Corea.

Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 7 is a part of a set revealed in 1803 as “Sonatas for the pianoforte with the accompaniment of violin.” This label displays an earlier time, when home music-making typically featured feminine pianists, who had been anticipated to have extra time to apply than their male companions on violin, and who subsequently might grasp tougher components. Within the case of this Sonata, every motion opens with the piano and the violin half, whereas it isn’t insignificant, typically follows the lead of the piano. Unusually for a bit named “sonata,” the Sonata No. 7 is in 4 actions, and the important thing of C minor marks it as an typically dramatic and stormy work.

Bach’s Third Partita is a set of dances, preceded by a Preludio. It’s the final of his set of Six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, one of many pinnacles of the solo violin repertoire. Within the brilliant key of E main, it is likely one of the most cheerful of the set. That’s significantly true of the Preludio, a perpetual-motion motion that’s one in every of Bach’s most acquainted items. Apparently Bach was himself keen on this motion, which he re-used in a model for organ and orchestra in his Cantata No. 29.
